Exclusively presented to students enrolled in the Photography & Filmmaking program at KCAI
Searching the Psyche Through Cinema: The Matrix
The 2024 Searching the Psyche Through Cinema film series, which looks to the arts (and this year, to science fiction) to illuminate our understanding of ourselves, continues with a screening and discussion of the 1999 classic The Matrix (R, 136 min.).
What can Keanu Reeves – as computer hacker Neo – show us about the human condition? When a beautiful stranger, played by Carrie-Anne Moss, leads him to a dark underworld, Neo discovers that the life he thinks he knows is really the elaborate deception of an evil cyber-intelligence. Will Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) alleviate or compound the confusion?
A post-screening discussion is led by psychoanalyst John Whipple, film critic Lonita Cook, and artist and community organizer Evan Maddox.
This event is co-sponsored by The Kansas City Public Library and the Greater Kansas City & Topeka Psychoanalytic Center
